From the warm, family-friendly atmosphere and excellent service to the understated interior and enticing menu, L’Antipasto has been a deserved local favourite from time immemorial. Top marks to starters of polenta alla triestina (polenta with wild mushrooms in a creamy dolcelatte sauce) and parma ham with figs. For mains, fettuccine with salmon was super-fresh, with a soul-satisfying richness that made spaghetti bella donna (with olives and anchovies in a tomato and caper sauce) seem rather less exciting by comparison. The tartufo nero, a delightfully calorific ice-cream bombe, rounded off a great meal. On Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday the restaurant halves its prices, drawing crowds and creating a convivial atmosphere worthy of a real Italian kitchen.
