More refined than you’d infer from its name alone, the Lawn Bistro is a classic French dining room that has added a strong independent voice to the chain restaurants and cafés of Wimbledon. Open since 2011, it offers accomplished French cuisine via two- or three-course prix fixe menus and a drinks list notable for French ciders and beer from Wimbledon’s By the Horns brewery. There’s also a good range of global wine, with plenty by the glass. Ollie Couillaud, formerly head chef at La Trompette, does stray geographically, though, so don’t be too surprised to find the likes of lamb with yorkshire pudding and mint sauce alongside dauphinois potatoes. Elegantly presented pan-fried sea bream synched well with pomegranate vinaigrette and artichoke purée, while guinea fowl leg with puy lentils benefited from smoky bacon lardons and a peppy salsa verde. Sweet seduction comes in the form of a baked alaska, torched at your table, for two to share, but the cheeseboard is also a temptation. The space itself is smart, grey and unremarkable, and service pleasantly attentive. Ring for details of ‘wine dinners’, when a specially conceived menu is designed around wines of a particular grape variety or region.

Avoid this local place if you can. Awful awful service- waiter got into a huff when we complained. Steak was cooked all wrong for all parties present. We were apologised to on numerous occasions when we pointed out the missing wine, orders etc and were told low staff numbers were to blame. 12.5% service charge slapped on bill at end. Needless to say it was not paid, needless to say wont be going back….

Had set lunch menu. Food very good, except over salted potatoes. Service poor and slow especially given the few customers; e.g. we got coffees with the enormous Baked Alaska not afterwards as requested.

Womble

Just what Wimbledon village has been crying out for. Good food an interesting wine list and comfortable environment. There are some teething issues with the bookings and credit card machine. Service was helpful and the baked alaska great fun. Perfect local restaurant.

Clarebear

Things did not start well when the restaurant had no trace of our reservation, it was not an issue however as they were not fully booked. Having read great reviews in the press we were expecting great food. In fairness the food was good although my serving of Seabass and chorizo risotto (pictured above) was a little on the stingy side. Unfortunately it was the service that really let the meal down. We had to remind the waiter that having ordered our food, we would now like to order the wine. The wine then only turned up half way through our starter (i gave up waiting for it before starting). Echoing some of the other reviews i have since seen (not on this site), when offered bread we had to hold up our plate for the waiter to place the roll on it and cutlery was handed to those of us in the corner rather than placed on the table, oh and we only got bread with the starter. The plates were promptly taken away shortly afterwards. Overall a good-ish meal, but not for the price, and the service seriously let it down which is a shame.

great restaurant with perfect food, we think that this is : beautiful design and fantastic service, definitely a destination, definitely...and the wine- this is place that is second to none in this neighbourhood. This place is putting Wimbledon Village on the London Map of finest dining experience, GREAT!

Happy Grandfather

Initial service hiccoughs will be sorted out, no doubt. But the food on our two visits has been faultless. Ollie Couillaud deserved better from Marriott at Bord'eaux, but people who remember his triumphs at Tom's Kitchen and La Trompette will be delighted to see him back at work in the kind of restaurant that adds something special to a neighbourhood. Lucky Wimbledon!
