This fun, fairly fast-food chain continues to impress with its inventive range of wraps, salads, rice boxes and soups, building on a reputation for healthy, global cuisine that’s both inexpensive and appealing. Part of Leon’s charm lies in its well-designed interiors, and this branch is particularly attractive, with big window tables giving a ringside view of Old Compton Street’s lively goings-on, and a cosy book-lined basement offering space for quiet contemplation. At the counter, choice is made difficult by a wide array of dishes that all sound good. On the whole, they are: a superfood salad featured crunchy broccoli and cucumber mixed with lots of peas and quinoa, ripe avocado, feta and fresh mint, and a side of baked fries provided a commendably grease-free boost of carbs. Soups are flavoursome and stuffed with fresh ingredients: a red pepper and wensleydale was silky and filling, the cheese adding a nice sharp touch to the sweet peppers. Not everything works – unless you’re under 12, we’d advise steering clear of the fish fingers and meatballs – but for its dedication to sustainably sourced ingredients and a menu of good home-style cooking, Leon stands out.
