As befits a café attached to one of south London’s best-loved outdoor swimming pools, the Lido Café is light, fresh and very chilled. It’s a simple white space, flooded with light, opening out on to a decked area of poolside tables, occupied by swimmers as well as dry-side diners. If the squishy sofas and attentive service don’t help you relax, then the soothing music (Goldfrapp, Nick Drake), potted palms and fresh-cut flowers will. The monthly menu is designed with love, care and boundless enthusiasm for seasonal British produce, stretching from the breakfast menu of eggs benedict, fry-ups and blueberry buttermilk pancakes (plus a cheeky weekend prosecco) through light lunch dishes (smoked haddock fish cakes, meaty burgers, seasonal tarts, and a juicy pulled-pork bap), to sophisticated evening dinners. Alternatively, you could just pop in for a seriously good coffee, a wicked slice of cake and a few lengths of front crawl. This was judged Time Out’s Best Park Café 2011, but it’s so much more than that.
