Renowned in Brixton for its piri-piri chicken, we found Lisboa Grill slightly underwhelming on our visit. The service was slow, although friendly when it came, and the food wasn’t special enough to justify the wait.
There are actually three parts to Lisboa Grill; the takeaway section at the front, the café (where we ate) to the left, and a more formal dining room painted with traditional Portuguese scenes behind. They all have the same menu, although the dining room seems to have more ambience – low beams and intimate lighting – compared to the basic café.
Grilled chicken was good, but the piri-piri sauce was dull. Bacalhau gomez de sa was an immense portion of flaked salted cod, boiled potatoes and hard-boiled egg baked with onions. This is old-style comfort food from Porto, served with black olives and a small salad, and a little too much oil. The own-made caramel flan portions are also enormous (share one between two), and come with a light and runny caramel sauce.
