Alfredo’s, then a little S&M (the former Sausage & Mash café, that is): as Islington landmarks go, this position is a prime cut, now carved out by Meat People. The 1920s Grade II-listed building with its tiled ceiling, wooden panelling and steel-framed windows still evokes the ocean-liner era, even with its vibrant yellow banquettes.
The current trend for steak and burger places means that competition in now hotter than a Josper grill. Meat People is no Hawksmoor or Meat Liquor, though – it’s a neighbourhood joint.
We opted for the Meat People Platter, a board bearing a selection of their main courses: slow-grilled beef short ribs, onglet steak and Iberico pork. The standout piece was the onglet, tender and yielding and cooked medium-rare as requested. The other two cuts had had a less profitable time on the grill. The pork was too blackened – the charring overpowered rather than offset the cut’s underlying flavour. The rib meat required a few chews too many, but the chimichurri garnish was good.
Beetroot and a handful of broad beans, although incongruously cold, nicely accompanied the pan-fried sea bream. The most exciting part of the dish was the huacaina sauce, a Peruvian mix that included white cheese and yellow chilli.
This is not a Latin American restaurant, but the chef happens to be Argentinian. A South American influence continued into the light desserts. Slices of caramelised banana were joined by a creamy scoop of dulce de leche ice cream, and slivers of lime rind brought alive a pear poached in Malbec, cinnamon and star anise. A filo tower with whipped cream and fruit compote had surprising finesse for a steakhouse.
This is a steakhouse, so it’s no surprise the sole vegetarian option is an uninspired mushroom risotto.
The quality of steaks in London at the moment is so high that standing out might be difficult for Meat People. But if it concentrates on making sure the standard of meat and cookery is consistently good, the carnivores of Islington may never have to leave N1.

Great makeover. Disappointed when we arrived as there was a veggie option on the online menu but not when we got the actual menu but the chef managed to put something together which was well done. Overall a decent option in Angel.
Well this was certainly an experience. We loved the deco and intimate style!!! Fantastic food and good to know there is somewhere in the area who can provide an OUTSTANDING meal without being over the top yet keeping classy.
A great selection of wines, staff were friendly and gave us great information on the menu as we struggled to make a decision. Overall the food was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone.

I can definately recommend this place. It provides great service, quality cuts of meat and a rare ambiance that not a lot of places have. We have become regulars here at Meat People as it stands out from other places - as it is not too over the top - it's good quality food, friendly staff in a comfortable environment.
When we arrived the restaurant was really busy so I was seated in the bar area - I didn't like to have to wait - although we hadn't made a reservation in advance. Overall the food was great and the girl who was serving us was nice and friendly. The wait wasn't too long at all - but I would recommend to make a reservation if you're coming here as it gets quite busy. Thanks, Helen.
Hi there, I went here for dinner with some mates and wanted to recommend it highly. The staff were so friendly and the steak was incredible. I would love to try another cut the next time I come back - they have cuts from all around the world which is a bonus. Thanks Meat People.
Felt very welcome coming back here to Meat People. I have been a couple of times as it's just around the corner from my house. Love the experience every time, the service, humour and especially the food. Has definitely become our local and easily becoming one of the best steak houses in London. Lovely.
I've been to steak houses before but there is something special about this one. It's got the art deco interior and is just across from Islington Green so a great location. Not only that, but the staff were so friendly on arrival and really attentive. This was a lovely experience and the food was so tasty. I had the T-bone steak and my friend had the stroganoff. Will be back again soon. Well done.
I thought from outside this place didn't exist but it's a whole world in there that you wouldn't expect. I enjoyed it - a different way to spend a Sunday :)
This was a great place for dinner. We went there at the weekend for a friends birthday and was pleasantly surprised. Not only that the food was great but the staff really gave their attention to you and got to know you. Impressive. Rate!
Personally I didn't care too much for the decor, and the atmosphere wasn't amazing as we were the only one there, but who cares when the steak was as good as it was. I have honestly had the steak of my life (so far) in this place. I spent £35 for a fillet steak, mushrooms and two beers. It was worth every penny.
Absolute pleasure every time i return to Meat People! The steaks are fantastic! Service is lovely, friendly and very very attentive! the place is so cozy, you never want to leave...It is a must visit if you are in the area!

We've eaten at most of the Big Steak places in London-but The Meat People is the best for the overall experience, and the price was reasonable. The waitstaff were quite friendly and fun. Steaks, sauces and sides were all delicious. Coming from beef country in the US, this is a find!

I went to Meat People upon reading the reviews below, I dont know if all these people who left good reviews work at the premises but my experience was far from what I read below. The waitress was rude, the decor budget and the food a little burned and an overwhelming taste of charcoal. To top it off I was overcharged and only realised when I got home. Maybe it will pick up, I know it is pretty new,
Working in the food & beverage industry it is fair to say I have experienced the joys of eating out on quite a number of ocassions in recent years. The standard from restaurant to restaurant can vary from the bland and the mundane to the exceptional. In great steak terms the exceptional from my experiences would be Gaucho, Hawksmoor, OXO Tower, Sophie's Steakhouse and now Meat People! If I say nothing else good about the venue, please go visit for the steak alone! I along with 4 friends sampled steaks from the Onglet to Rib Eye and my own choice Fillet. All were utterly brilliant, oozing with taste and cooked just to the specified requirement. On the wider scale of the food menu the starters equalled the steaks with my choice of cured meats going down a treat. There were also very favourable noises about the scallops and pork belly. All of which were generously portioned. It may also be worth adding that the cocktails seem to have been somewhat neglected by other customers offering feedback. As good a cocktail as you'll find anywhere on the main streets of Angel. The decor of the venue admitedly took me a little while to adjust too. On first appearence it does resemble an old cafe. There is a definite element of the 1920s era here. This is beauty of the decor though! This is a listed building, a pretty special selling point imo, something that the waiting staff should perhaps make more of a play of. Once I realised this I began to 'get' the concept and as if by magic the decor comes to life! Without meaning to offend the Angel Islington clientel, perhaps the style would be more appreciated by the Shoreditch 'cool' crowd who I assume would 'get it'. Improvements? Given that the chips come at an extra cost I felt perhaps some more creativity could have gone in to the chip serve. Standard chips albeit nothing wong with the quality. Value for money? Most certainly. What you are guarenteed here is top quality steaks. Fast food burgers this is not. Don't visit if this food/price range you anticipate. Whilst the costs are more than that of a burger joint, this is like comparing prosecco with champagne. Enjoy!
Fabulous - down to earth cooking of excellent produce. The understated decor and welcoming, knowledgable staff made our dining experience with "Meat People" on saturday night a real night to remember. We enjoyed a specialist drink at the bar and I chose a platter of cooked meats with olives and fresh bread -wow! My daughter had the scallops which were as she put it - amazing!! I went with the waiters choice of ribeye (no mistake there) while my daughter enjoyed the pork - both of them incredibly tasty and cooked to perfection. Can't mention the deserts without wanting to raid the fridge........simply on a par with the best I've had.....and home made!! Somehow, they seem to have very quickly got the balance of the menu and their service spot on - will most definitely recommend it and will certainly be back - it's a no-brainer!! Having dined on 2 occasions at "meat people" I was overwhelmed with joy at the idea of having a local alternative to "Frederick's" (which by the way is gradually turning into a rip off considering the quality of the food served) The meet I tried at Meat People is obviously of a high quality and carefully cooked, the fries were to die for. As for deserts, a delight for the eyes as well as the palate! The staff was really friendly and efficient. MP is definitely a valuable addition to our neighbourhood and I'm so glad it is not another chain restaurant! Definitely worth a try! Good luck to you all at Meat People
So after a long wait me and some friends visited our new neighborhood meat house. Firstly the venue looks amazing - i was not expecting the level of finish and attention to the buildings history. I was told the bar and walls were covered by wood they found deep behind all the fake formica that had been slapped on over the years. The yellow (real) leather sofa seating lights up the place and the lovely reclaimed tiles around add a touch of 1920 to the place. The food, if i'm honest - was flawless. I was expecting a certain standard but it was a lot higher than i thought - and at a reasonable price for the quality. Service was friendly and they seamed to care about stuff, i was recommended a beautiful wine and how advised on the best way my steak should be cooked. Very refreshing. A great little gem for Angel and if you know your food and care about quality you will pick this over most other restaurants on Upper Street. Thanks Meat People - i'll be back soon!
I was rather disappointed with my dining experience, firstly my order was wrong, the prices were expensive for the size servings and given that the decor was budget, it was freezing in the venue so it was hard to relax and the service was poor, the charcoal taste on the steak overcame any possible flavour it may have had, overall I felt a little robbed after my first experience there and probably wont go back Im sorry to say.
I wandered into Meat People, which is next to Islington Green, for lunch on Saturday (14 Jan 2012) with my partner, having seen banners in December announcing its forthcoming opening. A waiter explained that the restaurant was not yet officially open but was trialling as a "soft opening". The decor is a combination of what I understand is the original 1950s interior (great) and some pretty cheap-looking modern tables and chairs and a badly constructed yellow banquette. Service was very friendly and quick. As we were only there for lunch we had main courses only. I had a rib-eye steak and my partner had a bavette steak (we shared chips, bearnaise sauce and steamed asparagus, boiled egg and shaved parmesan). The food was uniformly excellent. Pricing was very good (although I think food was discounted for the soft opening). I would definitely consider going back to eat there. The downside for me was the room/decor. It isn't a place which encourages you to stay for a long meal, whereas the food on offer on the menu is perfect for a two-hour dinner. Best of luck to Meat People!
