Much thought has clearly gone into New Cross House’s international menu of simple, appetising plates – ‘foot-long’ hot dog; warm beetroot, feta and horseradish tart; chorizo roast potatoes with confit chicken; sloppy salt beef bagels; juicy rosemary-marinated lamb kebabs with crisp salad; dahl with flatbreads. There are pizzas too, big and crispy and cooked in a wood-fired oven; and Ice Cream Union ice-creams, which come in left-field flavours such as coconut sorbet and Jack Daniel’s.
From the street, the building looks a smart, unassuming sort of place, more gentrified than some of its neighbours, but the interior goes on forever with a long, well-stocked bar, raised booths, a TV screen, table football, piano and a dartboard. The pub is sibling to the Florence microbrewery in Herne Hill and East Dulwich’s the Actress, so there are house beers such as Weasel and Bonobo on tap.
We particularly love the playful photocopied ‘wallpaper’, which replicates the original Victorian tiling. Out back there’s not just a beer garden, but a whole other world including a ping-pong table and a magical two-storey barn with comfy sofas and wood-fired heaters. A fun, friendly place with plenty going on.
