Nizuni has the same polished feel as its Korean counterpart Koba round the corner on Rathbone Street. The decor strikes an elegant balance between contemporary and classic Japanese style, while each dish arrives on well-considered crockery.

The menu blends traditional and fusion elements, evident in a starter of yellowtail sashimi with avocado ‘mousse’ and truffle oil, which took the taste buds on a journey through layers of earthy, sweet and aromatic flavours. Next came a crowd-pleasing dish of crispy rock-shrimp tempura, lightly coated in a sweet chilli sauce. Beef nabe was another big hit: slippery noodles, soft tofu, Asian mushrooms and slices of beef simmered in a sweet and savoury broth.

The only let down was the sushi. The fish was fresh, but the chalky rice just didn’t make the mark. We ended on a high, though, with a sticky chestnut cake offset by green tea ice-cream. Kirin beer (expensive at £4.20 a bottle) was our chosen accompaniment. Service waned a little towards the end, but staff were polite enough. If you feel like another drink after your meal, check out the cocktail bar in the basement.

I've eaten here with family twice and enjoyed it on both occasions. Good sushi and sashimi, indeed no problems with any of the food. Service has always been exactly as expected - not like the staff were on roller-skates but they didn't dawdle. Will be returning.

Whet to nizuni for my boy friend birthday party Had sushi selection and it was fresh and melting in my mouth. All the starters was tasty Ended up with chestnut cake. Staffs was efficient and friendly

We waited an 1 hour and 30 minutes for our food and they still got the order wrong. It was 45 minutes before we got our drinks and there were not that many people there at the time. We reminded them 3 times during that time.

We had a good dinner , tempura was fine, excellent sushi . Maki california with crab was the only weak point. Good green tea ice cream. Lovely staff, very kind.

This restaurant was beyond the imagination. The service was extremely poor - slow, inaccurate (we had to change the salad 4 times until they understood what was wrong with it) and it took us 30 minutes to get a glass of wine. They forgot half of the order and spoilt the other half. DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPOIL YOUR NIGHT.
