Noiya in Lavender Hill serves up Indian mainstays but the menu also lists some more imaginative specials. From the signature column, we ordered hydra lamb – succulent chunks of meat stewed with chickpeas in a rich tomato and cumin gravy. The dish was served with nariyal pilau, basmati rice steamed with sweet coconut shavings. From the clay oven, our waiter recommended mahi king prawns pickled with yoghurt, mint and mustard seeds. Despite the elegant presentation, the prawns were rather overwhelmed by too many flavourings. A mildly spiced muchuri dhal from the menu’s vegetarian selection came with a side chutney of toak (spiked gravy made with chargrilled tomatoes, garlic and bay leaves). With only two waitors, service was down to crawl at time.
