This long-established restaurant not far from St Pancras comes with a towering reputation, but, be warned, its prices can be just as lofty. The interior resembles a Cotswold village tearoom, with what looks like an old hotel bar plonked in the middle. Service is efficient, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Starters, mains and desserts are varied and the bar well-stocked. Prawns in spicy batter (a special) was good value, and own-made cod fish cakes well above average. The hoo-ha, though, is all about the fish – and here size matters. A plate of Scottish salmon was nothing short of huge, and surely not for one person (it was). Other fish portions come in normal or jumbo size – normal would be considered ‘large’ in any other chippy – but the quality was only slightly above average. A portion of peas was enough for three, but the chips were disappointing: anaemic and floppy. The North Sea needs to sharpen up its act, or be superseded by the new breed of chippies.
