The Old Brewery, as you might guess, is all about beer. OK, it’s partly about the Grade-II listed hall and World Heritage Site location, amid the quads of the Royal Naval College (now Greenwich University). It’s owned by Greenwich microbrewery Meantime, and even the decor is dominated by beer – a giant chandelier made of 2,000 blue bottles, eight copper brewing vats, and a wall frieze illustrating the history of brewing.
A basic café menu is available during the day; in the evening, it turns into a restaurant. The food (modern British standards emphasising local produce) often acknowledges London’s hop-growing neighbour, such as the blue cheese salad with Kentish cobnuts. And there’s yet more beer, both as drink pairings and incorporated into the dishes – witness London Porter-braised lamb shoulder, Meantime IPA-braised neck of Tamworth pork, crème caramel served with Meantime Chocolate Porter-soaked prunes.
The result: great pub food in comfortable surroundings, with genial service. Unfortunately, prices suggest the aim is higher, and on this score it falls short. The adjoining bar is really the star, with its fantastic array of world beers and a menu served outdoors in the charming courtyard where you can fully appreciate the setting.
