Run by a Czech father and his two sons – one in the kitchen bringing French panache to a contemporary Eurovision menu, his younger brother a friendly and efficient presence in the dining room – this is a great neighbourhood restaurant. But the corner site, part of an unprepossessing new-build block, and the could-be-anywhere interior with arty photos of food doesn’t give away how special it is. Crunchy, lemony falafel on beets, radish and cucumber with mint leaves and coriander and a sour cream dressing made a refreshing starter, with zesty flavours as much Eastern European as Middle Eastern; perfectly cooked scallops were matched with celeriac remoulade perked up with little capers and micro leaves. Carnivores can have steaks and, less predictably, rabbit instead of chicken. An extremely generous serving of monkfish and parma ham with asparagus (just in season) was raised to classical heights with a hollandaise-type sauce. The dashing veggie option was open ravioli of silky sheets of pasta with squash, courgette ribbons and tomato sauce. For an extra outlay, hand-cut chips are undoubtedly the finest fries on the Roman Road. Chocolate melting pudding smartly matched with berries was the business. Only the wine list is a weakness, but like the food it’s fantastic value. Palmers would be an asset in any area; in E2, it’s exceptional.

Consistently good food, matched by a great wine list, and all wrapped up in super friendly professional service. Wish more restaurants could offer the same. Love it.
Finally we came to palmers restaurant, witch is based in East London , to have a dinner. Nothing special, quit boring menu with funny stuff. "Hipsters" with flip lops. We had Sunday roust, meal quality and presentation 50-50. To call good roast for 10£ idea it's nice to eat /// not bad.
This is me and my boyfriend's favourite restaurant. We go as often as we can. The food is so good - always really top notch and excellent quality and the price is nice. I had a pork chop the size of my head once. I will never forget it...
exceptionally good food, genuinely warm service, great wine, and all so reasonably priced; you get ALOT for your buck. for starters i had an extremely generous portion of fois gras on top of the most gloriously sticky tarte tatin i have ever had. and all that for £6!!! what more can i say. 10/10
Just lovely. I couldn't recommend this restaurant highly enough; great menu, relaxed atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff. We were greeted by (I assume) the father and were served by (again, I assume) his son. Lovely people, and most importantly unpretentious, incredible food at a very reasonable price. Big portions too. And you have to try the homemade peanut butter ice cream!
It doesn't matter what you choose, all the dishes are cooked to perfection! The service is brilliant and the desserts are to die for.... It is also very affordable and it makes you think twice about eating anywhere else. You should definitely pay palmers a visit!!
once you've found palmers, it completely changes your ranking / opinion of other London restaurants. We've been coming here for 2 years and have a constant dilemma every Friday night, feeling that we should sample elsewhere but knowing that nowhere will offer the same price / quality / experience as Palmers! food is always experimental, and reliably delicious. If you go back, you can be sure that you will be remembered next time and greeted with incredible warmth. We have been here with parents, friends, big groups, quiet couple nights, and every time we're so proud of the lack of pretentiousness (sometimes hard to find in east London!) - and as excellence doesn't have borders, this opinion is shared by all of our friends from all over the world - (UK / French / Australian / Spanish )
Absolutely shocked at how amazing this place is! It's the best restaurant I've been to in East London, and perhaps even London if considering the value for money. I had the Bouillabaisse to start - rich, delicious and very generous with the seafood - and the grilled pork chop for mains, which was equally as tasty. Come hungry as the portions as massive.
Palmers serves some of the best food (at the most reasonable price) of any restaurant I've eaten at in London. It has all the hallmarks of top cuisine: great service, nice decor, good wine list and fantastic food... without being pretentious or overpriced.
Both the service and the constantly changing menu are exceptional. Aside from more refined offerings, the steak and chips is one of the best around and could compete with more well known specialists who dish it up at more than double the price! Deserts are always good too and if they have chocolate brownie on the menu do not miss it!
I have taken family and friends to Palmers nearly every time I'm in London. I agree with every word in the Time Out review. Hoping to come again in late January 2013
I just love love love this place. We used to live 5mins away and it is the kind of neighbourhood restaurant u dream about- friendly, warm service & delicious interesting food that is very reasonably priced. Yes the decor is plain and simple, but everything else is so wonderful. We have now moved away from London and WE MISS PALMERS! Go.
This has to be one of my favourite restaurants in London. The food is always exceptional and great value with a varied and frequently changing menu.The service is spot on- polite, friendly amd knowledgable. Plus they do the best Sunday lunch in the area. Well worth a trip- you won't be disappointed!
The food here is amazing - and we like the Czech family that runs it. If you are lucky they will have 'paprika squid' on the starter menu - its amazing. They change the menu a lot, so there is always something different to try. We live nearby so we go there often.
One of the best restaurants in East London. We go a lot - found it by accident and decided to risk it, so glad we did. They also do amazing Sunday roasts. It's a family restaurant, the dad does front of house, his gourmet-trained sons are the chefs. Everything is made there - try the mussel starter, huge, 5.50, and a steak or rabbit leg main, about 12 pounds. The house red, Le Chaz, surprisingly good at 14 pounds. The food is really, really good - laid back, family friendly atmosphere.
It is said you should never have regrets in life, a view I agree with however this restaurant may prove the exception. I have lived close to this restaurant for a while and often thought about popping in but never did until tonight.. Great food, great service, we will be coming back very soon.
Palmers is just brilliant, me and my partner make weekly visits here as the food (regardless of what you order) is always full of flavour with the best ingredients. You certainly get great value for money here, I can't recommend it enough, the customer service is just super from the young lad (try your hardest not to fall in love with him, he is a super cutie!). Be warned: you WILL love it, and you WILL come back.
Stubbled upon this for a Sunday lunch. What a pleasure. Friendly service ( all family members I expect) very reasonable and excellent food. Instantly marked as one to come back to. Liked the short menu and wine list. Suggests a good business confident in what they offer .
I have had some of the best meals I have ever tasted here, they never let me down. The food is delicious, i even sometimes look at the photo of the meal i took at our Xmas dinner at Palmers and salivate, it was so gorgeous! The price is good, the staff are lovely and the food brilliant.
Amazing and adorable. Restaurant of the modern Frenchy-British ilk run by a friendly Czech family - Pops and three talented sons. It has a small, balanced menu and the cooking is great - starter portion of bouillabaisse was packed with fresh seafood and fish, accompanied by a zesty, spiced rouille and parmesan toasts (disproving the fish and cheese rule!). Delicious. Favourite dish was a whole roast baby chicken with wild mushrooms and chive gnocchi, which was just awesome. AWESOME. Crispy skin, rich sauce, floaty-light gnocchi...the works. So good. The decor is a bit naff but that's quite charming in its own way, and as dfoz says below, the restaurant has its priorities in the right order. The service - mainly pops and his youngest son - was well paced and the kid is very sweet…a bit bashful and shy but knows what he’s talking about, and talks proudly about his brothers in the kitchen if you ask. Utterly charming. Dropped in the West End you'd probably pay twice as much - definitely worth the trip out east. Go!
Made our third visit to Palmers this weekend. We like it more each time we go. The Sunday roast is excellent and better value than any of the pubs on the other side of the park, in Hackney village. I'm working my way through the starters and can recommend the bouillabaisse and the beef and papaya. They had monkfish cheeks on the menu at one point too which was great. Perhaps they could make the dining room a little bit more intimate in some way. That said, the service and open kitchen hatch make the place feel friendly and welcoming. There are enough places where decor comes at the expense of the food. Palmers thankfully has it's priorities in the right places.
I cant recommend this place highly enough. Fantastic food, some dishes with an unusual edge to them and all well executed. Service was friendly and attentive but not fussy - a good complement to the really great food. Prices are reasonable. This place is by far the best in the area. I'm looking forward to going back soon.
We eat here regularly and feel that the quality of both the food and the cooking is excellent. Whilst the menu is deliberatey kept small as all the ingredients are sourced locally and are therefore fresh when cooked there is never any difficulty in choosing what to have - in fact the difficulty is in choosing which items on offer to eat on any particular visit. There are a number of up and coming restaurants in the area but for the moment Palmers leads the field.
Palmer's is my gourmet dining room. I was delighted when it opened on the Roman road at Twig Folly bridge. I have tried everything their superb and artistic chef has to offer. The starters set you up well for their highest quality mouth-watering steak or seafood. The vegetarian option is just as tasty and I must have the desert even though I don't have a sweet tooth. I used to travel around London to find good food until Palmer's opened. Did I mention the wine? Be careful of the Fleur de Lis, a delicious and very smooth fruity red - one glass is never enough!!
The food here was delicious i had duck ravioli for starter and could of easily had a bigger portion as a main.. then i had the rabbit which was delicious.. the cheesecake was to die for as well. The service was nice and not rushed... so we didnt feel under pressure to leave. We went on a Monday night so there was no seabass unfortunately but still the steak my boyfriend had was cooked to perfection and the chips were chunky and very filling. I definately want to go back here in fact every week would be nice if i could afford it. Although not that pricey for the size of the portions. Be prepared to be stuffed and very drunk if on the red wine :)
Really pleased with this one. Nice place and great food along modern british/euro lines. There’s a limited menu so an outside chance it'll get cooked well and it was. I had an excellent bouillabaise followed by rabbit on red cabbage and celeriac.. My partner had duck ravioli then sea bass fillets with squid. Finished it off with a prune and almond tart with rum and raisin ice cream and an excellent cheescake. The service was polite and very welcoming. Only wierdness was a light that comes on at the serving hatch when service is called. A bit odd that one and vaguely irksome. Also the limited wine list escalates steeply in price. (Hello! We're in a recession people!) The glass of french red I had was very smooth and pleasant though and went well with my food. We enjoyed a relaxed Saturday out there and will happily go again
