Pancakes are available all year round, but Shrove Tuesday (12 February in 2013) is the ‘Fat Tuesday’ in Christian tradition when rich ingredients are used up before the fast of Lent. Prepare for a battering at these pancake venues.

55 Aldwych, London, WC2B 4BB (020 7499 8558)This ‘grand café’ (brasserie) in the Continental mould has some of the most sought-after tables in London right now. The weekend brunch menu includes a pancake section, with fillings such as maple syrup, bacon or blueberries and crème fraîche.

79 Salusbury Road, London, NW6 6NH (020 7604 4484)This Queen’s Park restaurant opens for breakfast at the weekend, when it serves up beautiful pancakes with mixed berries and maple syrup or chocolate sauce.

Crepe Affaire
173 Wardour St, London, W1F 8WTA good range of sweet and savoury fillings is offered at this fast food café chain, along with a small selection of pastries including waffles. The crepes are filled then reheated to order, and the service is quick and friendly. There are also branches in Spitalfields, Hammersmith, Westfield London, Westfield Stratford, and St Pancras Station.

Soho Creperie
63 Dean St, London, W1D 4QG (020 7437 0071)This new creperie (opened in late 2011) offers a huge range of fillings, from tartiflette (potato, cheese, lardons) to chicken and peanut butter. They happily take requests for variations too. There’s a good selection of sundaes and smoothies, though the crepes are so filling you might not have room for them. Their sister branch, the original, is in South Kensington.

The menu offers a selection of excellent buckwheat pancakes, with fillings ranging from creamy leeks with scallops to melted cheese and ratatouille, as well as a number of sweet crepes.
