Stuck on a rather unpromising stretch of Turnpike Lane, and with a rather dated interior, Penang Satay House isn't immediately appetising. But this unpretentious Malaysian restaurant is what budget eating is all about: good grub at great prices. Not a single dish disappointed on our last visit, with orange chicken and melt-in-the-mouth beef rendang among the highlights. Every element of the cooking showed attention to detail, from the mixed fried rice to the piquant peanut sauce, and portions were generous enough to make chomping our way through the £14.50 set menu a pleasurable struggle. Staff were welcoming and efficient; even thought the place was busy, we were encouraged to linger over a glass or two of highly drinkable house wine.
