It's back. Pitt Cue Co, which last year launched a food truck so successful they had to open a restaurant proper, has for summer 2012 re-opened their van under Hungerfod Bridge (on the South Bank, under the railway line from Charing Cross to Waterloo East). Once again, they're peddling good ol’ American barbecue. Vegetarians need not apply, as it’s all meat here: pork, chicken, messy pork ribs and beef brisket, to name a few.
The flesh of your choice is paired with odd-sounding but brilliant root beer beans (red kidney beans slow-cooked with the soda and tomatoes), or with crunchy red cabbage and parsley coleslaw – ask for a bit of both if you can’t decide. Pickles, Scotch bonnet hot sauce (optional) and chargrilled bread are tucked into your cardboard box, too.
Our hickory-smoked and slow-cooked pulled pork was the real deal – well-seasoned, tender, meaty strands that were moist without being mushy. Save the bread for mopping up the juices left at the end.
And that’s not all. There are also cocktails (rum punches, hard lemonades, negronis), or ale from the nearby Kernel Brewery. But it’s the notorious ‘pickle back and skin’ getting the Twitterati hot under the collar: a shot of bourbon chased by a shot of pickle brine, with a little cup of pork crackling on the side. Pitt Cue Co is here for the summer, so there’s plenty of time to work up enough courage to give ‘pickle back and skin’ a go.
