When this lovingly renovated former gin palace opened to critical fanfare in 2008, locals and Wood Lane BBC staff flocked to the spacious bar (serving first-rate, mostly meaty snacks) and elegant dining room – a leap up from the Bush’s existing venues. Yet later that year, the Queen Adelaide sprang up down the road, followed by the beast that is the Westfield shopping mall, shifting the focus closer to the tube stations.
On our latest visit here, we were alone in the dining area for most of the evening. With an impressive wine list (36 by the glass), three real ales on tap, and smart, sober panelling painted a drawing-room green, the Princess Victoria positions itself at the upper end of gastropubbery, yet prices remain on the whole reasonable.
A light main course of own-made Thai sausages with fresh chilli dipping sauce and matchstick vegetables cost under £10, though we succumbed to additional chips: triple-cooked, chunky beauties. From the grill selection, our cheerful waiter recommended the hanger steak for its tenderness: the thinly sliced cut was a revelation. There are sharing boards of smoked fish and pork for more relaxed eating, along with a selection of rarely seen British cheeses.
