RoussillonA neutral colour scheme, punctuated by occasional flower arrangements, epitomises the restrained elegance of this fine-dining restaurant. The ambience is matched by a clientele of deep-pocketed local residents and crisp business suits. Chef-patron Alexis Gauthier’s adventurous menu celebrates classic French cooking, fresh British produce and seasonal global specialities. Starters of light gnocchi worked well with the stridency of soft gorgonzola cheese and contrasting sweetness of balsamic vinegar. Equally superlative were plump seared scallops, garnished with a swirl of aromatic shellfish jus and wisps of black truffle: a marvellous combination. Main courses also lived up to expectation: tender Angus beef fillet, cooked to retain a perfect pinkness, scored top marks for succulence and was enhanced by butter-kissed purple artichokes and the bite of black olives. After polishing off a pre-dessert tease of tart lemon jelly topped with shards of grapefruit granita, we sunk our spoons into Indian mangoes and silken jasmine sorbet, and demolished a delectable chocolate parfait. You don’t need to stray far from Languedoc-Roussillon in the wine list, or to spend more than around £30, but ample pleasures await if you do. Set menu options appease the pampered palates of young ’uns, and cater for vegetarians too. Source: Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2008
