Al Sultan

In recent years Al Sultan has shrugged off a reputation for chilliness to become a comfortable though still traditional and pastel-shaded place to dine. Heavily starched tablecloths, suedette-covered chairs and sparkling glassware are still very much the order of the day, but we found efficient, relaxed and friendly staff on a recent visit, engendering a relaxed conviviality among diners the perfect mode for enjoying some top-class Lebanese food. We liked everything we tried. Fatayer had lovely soft pastry and fresh-tasting, lemony spinach. Classic fuul, mashed up in its pool of olive oil, was mellow and filling (add a swirl of smooth, smoky houmous for a denser, different flavour). Chicken livers (sawda djaj) were soft and zesty (thanks to just the right balance of lemon and pomegranate juice in their thin sauce), and halloumi cheese was grilled to perfection. Green dishes, like tabouleh (tangy, tasty and meticulously chopped into tiny pieces) and a fresh fuul moukala, complemented other dishes beautifully. We finished our meal with Turkish coffee, served with a selection of complimentary, fresh Arabic pastries.
