Christopher'sChristopher’s is an attractive spot, with its creamy decor and wide windows letting in light and air. The restaurant has long staked out a position on the first floor of one of Covent Garden’s prettier buildings. Below is a newly trendy ground-floor bar, and a marble Italianate staircase that leads up to the dining room. The menu is consistently excellent, featuring some of the best US cuisine – juicy steaks from Nebraskan cattle, lobster from Maine – as well as more elaborate dishes such as pan-fried sea bass with fennel and chorizo, halibut cooked in red wine with roast salsify, and roast pumpkin mousse with shiitake mushrooms and pumpkin salsa. The restaurant still has too much expense-account padding (£22 for the burger with lobster, for example, and £27.50 for a 14oz sirloin), but it also has more affordable dishes, and creative options such as fillet steak served ‘carpetbag style’: with fried oysters. Desserts are always outstanding; the chefs do things with peach melba your grandma never thought of. The atmosphere is just slightly formal, but never uncomfortable. Service verges on impeccable, and the wine list is seductive. Source: Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2008
