Mango RoomMango Room’s menu abandons cliché in favour of a modern approach to Caribbean cuisine. Based on the superb cooking we’ve usually enjoyed here in the past, we had high expectations of starters such as ‘ebony’ chicken and grilled prawns skewered with rosemary. But on this occasion both dishes were decidedly ordinary; the chicken lacked flavour and the rosemary overpowered the seafood with its strong flavour. A chargrilled pork loin lacked depth or character; the meat didn’t taste as if it was of especially high quality, and no amount of spicy sauce can make up for that. But things improved with a perfectly grilled main of entrecote steak garnished with mango salsa. Caribbean fruit cake is always a popular option for dessert, so we ordered that and were not disappointed. Service too was just right: friendly and attentive but not intrusive. Mango Room is to be applauded for having a go at mirroring the kind of modern, sophisticated vibe that one finds in the Caribbean’s best restaurants; it’s just a pity that the results were so variable.
