Sam's Brasserie & Bar

Set in a stunning converted Victorian industrial space behind Chiswick Green, Sam’s has a slightly corporate feel. There’s real potential here – it won Best Local Restaurant in our 2006 Eating & Drinking Awards – but on our lunchtime visit the place lacked atmosphere. Although the restaurant incorporates an open kitchen, the buzz of the chefs at work just didn’t translate into the rest of the space. Food was well prepared, but uninspiring. Twice-baked blue cheese soufflé had a melt-in-the-mouth texture, yet the ceps vinaigrette that came with it was overpowering and vinegary. Also, we were coaxed into ordering a tomato and onion salad, which was both unnecessary and dull. Own-made fish fingers from the children’s menu were crunchy and full of flavour – worth including on the adult list. For dessert, chocolate torte had just the right texture, halfway between a cake and a mousse; ice-cream (good but not great) arrived with fruits and sauce. The meal was good value, but lacked the wow factor the impressive interior leads you to expect – though it’s buzzier at night. The bar by the entrance is friendly and relaxed, with a substantial wine list and extensive brunch menu.
