ChakalakaA haven for expatriate South Africans, Chakalaka makes a colourful spectacle with its zebra-striped frontage, red walls and tribal ethnic artefacts. Its an informal venue, popular with young, well-off professionals. The menu gives a modern spin to dressed-up Afrikaner dishes, grills sauced with peri-peri marinades, and occasional African specialities. These guys are big on game; should ostrich, crocodile or antelope be your thing, this spots for you. Weve had excellent meals here in the past, but more recently, cooking has fallen short of expectations. However, service remained as smiley and swift as ever. Highlights included fresh-from-the-sea oysters doused with red chilli and onion salsa: simple, unspoilt and delicious. Salmon and crab meat fish cakes scented with lemongrass were let down by their impenetrable breadcrumb crust. Main courses delivered better results, with a meaty hunk of succulent springbok loin served with crushed sweet potatoes and caramelised onion confit. Steak lovers have choice aplenty; theres even a whopping 650g Namibian T-bone steak. Vegetarians arent top priority, their options limited to butternut soup and a couple of salads. Expect hearty rather than gourmet cooking and lots of meat. Source: Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2008
