Afghan Kitchen

Budget Choice

Although lacking any obvious Afghani design influence, this tiny two-floored space is pleasant enough. Jade-green walls, shared pine tables and lots of light create a fresh and straight-up vibe. The menu is equally simple, consisting of four meat and four vegetarian dishes: all pre-prepared and generally fairly mild (and often featuring yoghurt). Lamb with spinach (qurma suhzi gosht) was flavourful and filling. Vegetarian dishes are tapas-like in terms of ingredients, yet portion sizes are reasonably large. Unless youre dining with someone who is willing to go halves on everything, you might have to get through a large plate of spiced pumpkin with yoghurt (borani kado) or dal tasty, but rather repetitive, and better suited as side dishes. Still, bowls of rice are available, and the large portions of warm fresh bread are great for mopping up such food. Afghan Kitchen is no place for lingering (theres little space and the rather complacent staff are hard to engage), but its a good bet for a quick, cheap bite, and makes a break from the norm.
