GiraffeIf theres one chain thats reliable on all fronts food, service, atmosphere, family-friendliness, value for money its Giraffe. This branch could be marked down for being just too popular, though. On our most recent visit (to escape inclement weather during a Sunday walk on the South Bank) there was a queue for a table. Nonetheless, the short wait sharpened our appetite for starters of sticky chicken wings and a colourful bruschetta in which cherry tomatoes, avocado, red pepper and mozzarella all played a part. Many of the dishes are ensemble pieces. Our favourite main course, the falafel burger, comes with grilled pepper, beetroot, rocket, halloumi and tzatziki; the Aberdeen Angus steak burger is less dressed up but adequately juicy. Another great main is the firecracker chicken with mushrooms, greens, pineapple, chilli sambal and noodles: all the food groups on one plate. With top puds (the fruit crumble is made for sharing), smashing sides, a hugely popular brunch menu, a sensible list for children (egg and soldiers, beans on toast, as well as proper mains), feel-good cocktails (especially the mango lime daiquiri) and feel-worthy smoothies the ubiquitous Giraffe always cheers, whatever the weather.
