Abyssinia

This smart Kilburn restaurant underwent a change of management in early 2007, though little has been altered in terms of menu or decor. The effort to present an ‘authentic’ Ethiopian style – paintings of Ethiopian countrymen and women cradling babies hang on the cream walls – is still compromised by minimalist glass mirrors that run in strips alongside them, but the restaurant is none the worse for the contrast. The menu promises an ‘Abyssinian culinary experience’, helped by Ethiopian music playing in the background, incense burning throughout the evening and a mouth-watering aroma of spices wafting from the kitchen. We tried various vegetarian dishes. Kik wot (boiled split yellow peas) was deliciously mild and delicately spiced, but misser wot (puréed split red lentils, simmered in berbere sauce) was a little too rich and overpowering. Cinnamon-hinted tea was served with dabo, a thick Ethiopian bread that’s eaten with savoury food as well as tea. It made for a refreshing end to a rich and enjoyable meal. Food arrived in reasonable time and service was extremely friendly.
