Electric BrasserieThe Electric Brasserie remains a buzzing venue with its busy terrace overlooking Portobello market and its folding doors adjoining the refurbished Electric cinema. Panoramic people-watching opportunities are offered. The New York diner-like menu has, over the years, proved a real crowd-pleaser, with breakfast served until noon daily, and brunch at the weekend. Whether youre after something light and slimming like a caesar salad, or something big and filling like a steak sandwich, or even something chic and tempting like baked lobster this is the place. Sometimes, though, a set lunch menu is a welcome relief as you pull up a heavy chair on the concrete floor by the chrome bar, and flag down one of the scurrying aproned staff. Squid, fennel and gremolata began our meal as nicely as the chicken and bacon salad, while a warm lamb sandwich made with ciabatta was a juicy, oozing highlight. Mackerel served with sage potatoes provided a fresh, simple treat. Strawberry mousse with mango sauce, and banana almond strudel with honey chocolate ice-cream begged to be eaten, and at the bargain set-lunch prices probably should have been. A considerable wine list also boosts the Electrics well-deserved popularity. Source: Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2008
