FurnaceUnenthusiastic service and tinny background music on our most recent visit did little to detract from our enjoyment of Furnace’s main USP – good-quality, thin-crusted and generously sized pizzas. The 16-strong list (most priced well under a tenner) offers classics alongside more creative combos such as wild mushroom with truffle paste or sausage with spinach and salsa verde. We found gorgonzola and pear a delicious and well-balanced partnership; a classic fiorentina proved even better, with its perfectly runny egg yolk and mounds of fresh spinach. Daily pasta, meat and fish specials (king prawn tagliatelle or sea bass with prawn and dill pancakes) sounded enticing, but were largely ignored in favour of pizza by an artily scruffy clientele. While we wouldn’t book a table here for the last party on earth, Furnace’s exposed brickwork, blond wood and huge windows make it a stylish venue for a low-key date, birthday dinner or a swift mid-bar-crawl refuel.
