2 VenetiThe cuisine from Veneto doesn’t rely heavily on olive oil and the pungent Mediterranean flavours usually associated with Italian food, and as a result it hasn’t travelled well beyond Italian borders. With a Venetian-inspired menu particularly strong on seafood, 2 Veneti has been steadily garnering converts to this lesser-known regional cuisine. Starters can be hit or miss. Beef carpaccio with parmesan mayonnaise was a textbook example of the dish, while the creamed salt cod, served in a tiny portion with rubbery polenta croûtons, was not. Pasta and main courses proved much better. The own-made sedanini pasta with venison and Amarone wine ragout was rich and gutsy, but the highlight of our visit turned out to be a gargantuan dish of fritto misto: a selection of battered fried fish that’s a speciality of Venetian cooking. It shouldn’t be missed here. An all-Italian wine list, delectable bread basket and own-made sorbets and ice-creams in unusual flavours (pear, for instance) provide nice finishing touches. Service is solicitous without being obtrusive. The brick wall decor is somewhat dated, but customers, a mix of regulars and locals, don’t seem to mind. Source: Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2008
