This is the second branch of the highly respected Shoreditch shop; the original is a tiny bar at the front of a men’s clothing store: no chairs, just stand there or take away.
The Leather Lane operation couldn’t be more different. It’s a large, airy space with plenty of comfortable seating, and is clearly designed for people who want to take their time. Which we did, with the happiest of results. This branch uses mostly Square Mile beans and one of two prototypes of a Dutch-made ‘Spirit’ espresso machine, given by the manufacturers for testing and feedback before rolling out production.
The coffee is excellent, though the espresso (like so many) wasn’t hot enough. For those who don’t want espresso or espresso with milk, top-notch brewed coffees are made using several different methods, including the increasingly popular Aeropress.
Food is good whether sweet or savoury, with prices that – while not exactly low – are in line with other places offering the same type of thing. Even amid stout competition, Prufrock continues to shine.
