Putney Station

Putney

This outpost of the Brinkley’s group is a vision of 1980s styling, all big plate-glass windows, venetian blinds and pot plants. It’s very much a neighbourhood joint, with a food menu consisting of daily-changing specials with a Modern European focus, but it’s one with an unusually well-constructed wine list, which has a revolutionary pricing policy that does away with conventional restaurant mark-ups and sticks closer to shop prices.

No one country or region dominates the 60-bottle list, which takes in a spread of vintages from France, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America and beyond. Bottles start around £8 and run to about £40; given the extremely decent prices, it’s easy to forgive the limited choice of wine by the glass.
