Ragged Canteen

Lambeth
This daytime café (now Wed-Sun only), inside an art exhibition building, has been serving up wholesome vegetarian brunches and lunches since September 2008. Customers press a buzzer to enter what was once the basement of a late Victorian school; the heavy flagstones and pillars give it a crypt-like feel. But the service is cheery and uplifting, and the dishes freshly prepared with real care using high-quality ingredients. On our visit the hard-to-resist main course was gözleme, a Turkish flatbread filled with a mash of potato, dill and caraway; this was accompanied by a chickpea salad, pert salad leaves and couscous (£4.80). This would have been a meal in itself, but we had to try the rhubarb and polenta cake (£2): moist, and neither too tart nor too sweet. The coffee’s from Monmouth, and breakfast includes own-made breads for toasting.

When cooking, my vegetarian option is usually "don't eat" (I know hilarious, but people manage to keep a straight face), however this little place is great. Had a couple of wonderful brunches, and reading the paper over an organic vegetarian brunch, with a cup of coffee, in an art gallery, with visual displays on the television made feel for an hour or so like one of those cool Londoners I always fancied being. That of course wore off as soon as i left, but it was nice to have for a while. Tried to go back a little while ago and they chef was off for about 6 months with an injury so they were not serving. Hope he is better and the place is back to serving cracking food.
