The union of the Curzon cinema and Konditor & Cook is a happy marriage indeed. The stylish café space at the front of the ground floor is furnished with tall stools at long counters, a few seats around a coffee table, plus a bar from which food and drink are dispensed. There’s a more limited selection of eats at this branch (soup is the only hot dish served; on our visit, it was creamed spinach with a cheese scone accompaniment), but the big plus is that the café is licensed, so alongside good coffee and interesting soft drinks is a range of wines and cocktails. Accompany these with a slice of quiche, a sandwich (smoked salmon with beetroot and cucumber, say) or a sausage roll. Or jump straight into the sweet stuff – a lip-smacking array of cakes, pastries, flapjacks and brownies, plus prettily packaged bags of biscuits (lemon moon, kipferl, gruyère), baby meringues, provençal-style nougat, chocolates and turkish delight. Have a look at the website to see the full glory of the company’s wedding- and party-cake range.
