London's best review, food and drink news
This is a noisy place (during busy lunchtimes the sound bounces off the grey tables and plastic chairs) but service is fast and smiling. The menu has been extended to include ciabatta sandwiches, wraps and melts, however, the original selection of deli favourites remains, featuring the likes of reuben sandwiches (corned beef, cheese and sauerkraut on rye bread), gefilte fish and burgers. The food was hit and miss on our visit: cold borscht resembled a beetroot cordial with little depth of flavour, but vegetable spring rolls were crisp and tasty. Main courses were similarly variable. An unexceptional plate of salt beef and a poor meat loaf with watery mashed potatoes came from the same kitchen as a fresh grilled sole with crisp, dry chips and a precisely-cooked liver and fried onions.
