The ground floor room, with nothing but a pizza furnace, counter and one table visible, might appear to be a takeaway. But look a little more closely and you'll see that freshly made rounds of hot fiteer (like an Egyptian pizza) are being whisked downstairs to a busy room with several tables. There is an extensive menu at Meya Meya, but the fiteer is the draw: envelopes of filo pastry filled with all manner of ingredients. The Cairo fiteer, with slices of basturma, tomato, pepper and olives, contained a generous portion of smoked beef with fresh vegetables. The menu also includes Egyptian staples such as fuul and taamaya (aka falafel). These were cooked well nigh perfectly: fuul was well seasoned and the taamaya were properly crunchy on the outside, while grease-free and an authentic green on the inside.
