  • Southwark Cathedral Refectory

    Budget choice
  • Southwark Cathedral's charming riverside courtyard is reason enough for a visit, and the dining space itself (airy and modern, yet retaining grander ecclesiastical elements like an arched ceiling and stone flagged floor) is alluring. Digby Trout-run, all food is cooked on site with no GM ingredients. Sandwiches, salads and soup (watercress, minted pea) combos are good value quick lunches at £4.95. Heartier hot dishes such as pork escalope (well-cooked and tender) with a tasty chilli, mango and corn salsa are served with herbed new potatoes, braised red cabbage with apple and thyme; vegetarian options include stuffed field mushrooms on a polenta cake and stuffed aubergine calzone (£5.95). Huge slabs of tempting cakes, coffee and organic juices are also offered for quick stops.
