  • Café Libre

    Budget choice
  • This prime location opposite the north end of Carnaby Street, with its panoramic view over the mock-Tudor splendour of the Liberty store, is a good place to rest your bags during a daytime shopping trip. Café Libre frees you for a short while to tuck into appealing sandwiches (until 6pm only), morsel-packed salads, or more substantial main courses. The tuna of our niçoise salad was grilled well, and there were plenty of other titbits to raise it above the norm: boiled quails' eggs and a handful of soybeans, for example. The cream tea's not bad either, with lashings of clotted cream on raisin scones. As in most cafés in West Soho, prices are on the high side, but that comes with the territory.

I'm sorry I have to say this but really, avoid Cafe Libre like a plague. Been there todya and my partner and I swear to never go again. The "hot chocolate" took about 15 minutes to arrive and it was cold when it finally did - not even close to warm (oh and it wasn't just because of the cream on top, the whole was cold. The atmosphere was alright, but don't expect to be able to get anything within 10-15 minutes. It's a cafe, it's meant to be at least reasonably fast service. They forgot about our bill and we had to ask a second time for it. That again took about 15 minutes. When we finally couldn't stand it anymore and went to wait at the door, they said the cashier had broken down. They resorted to COUNTING CHANGE from the tip pot and it WASN'T THE RIGHT AMOUNT. We were too angry to argue with them and just left and regretted so much for ever having stepped in.

I live in Birmingham and everytime i go shopping in London 9 times out of 10 i'll go for dinner here. The food is always really good and the staff are friendly. The chilli crab pasta and lamb cutlets are delicious!
