Chef Tom Pemberton is a graduate of St John and St John Bread & Wine, and the influence behind his forthright cooking style is clear, from the deep-fried calf’s brain starter to the use of laverbread and piccalilli elsewhere. You could only be dining in Britain. Cockles with cider and lovage featured some of the plumpest, juiciest cockles we’ve eaten. It was an inspired take on moules marinière with the celery-like lovage providing an aroma and flavour that was true Brit. Grilled venison and beetroot came – like the rest of the dishes – utterly plain, with only the perfectly cooked, fine-grained meat and the dressed beetroot and beet-leaves. Such simplicity is daring. We would have preferred our duck livers a bit more rare in the centre, but the generous portion of green beans in a tarragon-mustard dressing was a great foil for the livers’ rich flavour. Desserts such as eton mess and raspberry ripple seem designed to appeal to the diner’s inner child, but the wines are strictly for grown-ups, with a succinct, Franco-centric list. The room is suitably sparse and there’s no music; just the chatter of appreciative diners.

It was an absolute pleasure to eat at Hereford Rd, the whole experience was a joy. The food was exciting, delicious and beautifully presented, the staff were helpful, polite and also beautifully presented! We have returned several times since and never been disappointed, may they continue on.
AMAZING! My first trip to Hereford road was a couple of months back. We arrived for dinner and were ushered past the chef in full flow. He was setting out several plates - one had a huge crab at the centre. We were escorted to our booth in the bright and buzzing lower seating area. The waitress was all smiles as she handed out the menus - I noted the crab listed as a "starter" and could not resist this followed by rabbit. Exceptionally well presented and a gourmet delight - best of all the wine menus subtle depth. Eton mess finished me off. Overall a triumph and the bill leaves a satisfying sense of value for money & "don't tell your friends, or we won't get a seat next time!"
Already penned in as our compulsory eating out venue .Superb..
The quality of the ingredients and the skill of the staff seems to produce simple dishes almost effortless. But dont be fooled - pound for pound this is one of the best restaurants in London.
Traditional and innovative - where else could you eat a samphire and broad bean salad followed by the legendary oxtail?
With great wines at competitive prices if you notice the time between courses you've probably gone with the wrong people.
Top tip - have a pudding wine.
POOR!!!!!!The worst experience ever with this restaurant! Was there End Jun 08. We had a friend arriving from the Far East who took long time to go thru immigration so we changed the booking fm 7.30 to 8.00. If they said NO, we could always go somewhere else. They cfmd to take us for 8.30. We were there just before 8pm & they could not take us into the dining area - BTW, the person (or manager) was super rude / arrogant. We took a walk. Back to the restaurant 8.20pm and hope to have a drink (business for them) before dinner. We sat outside. Asked the lady what juice they had, she said she must check as she was new. We also asked for the menu so we can choose what food we'd like. Immediately, she said, 'Can you tell me what juice you want so I can come with the menu?' The staff is poorly trained. So we have to choose something out of unknown choices. We waited for the juice for a long time. Another lady came - 'oh, the juice is freshly squeezed so it will take a while.' ???? Hello????? more than half an hour for a drink! We were seated late. Juice & menu came about half an hour later. Appetizer came about 45-50mins after we ordered. They served people came after us first - we ordered well before them. Gone 10pm, not a sign of main course - no attention from waiters or waitresses. We could see the frustration of other customers. Service was bad. I had the fish or seafood soup, it was so thin and tastless. I expected more from this restaurant. We finally got some attention and the lady said our main course is on its way - but never mentioned how long it would be. We kept chasing... at the end...we had to walk out of the restaurant as there was no service / no food. The manager looked embarrassed then!Try to act posh?! Very disappointing when v tried to show our fr London nice places! I think there are tons of lovely restaurants for fussy diners like us. Def not this 1.
