A relative newcomer to Earl’s Court’s restaurant row, Kappa is a top pick of the neighbourhood. It’s a low-key place, but has a certain stylishness, with gold-toned walls, candles and black tables. The owner is a Korean-born sushi chef and there’s a clear Korean influence on many dishes here, such as grilled scallops with gochujang (a Korean spicy bean paste). Three scallops, cut through the middle into discs and sandwiching finely chopped vegetables, were topped with a frazzle of deep-fried sliced leek and zigzagged with the spicy red paste; they looked gorgeous on their rectangular plate and were just as pleasing on the palate. A temaki (cone-shaped hand roll) containing stir-fried pork belly, rice and the well-loved Korean condiment kimchi, may have been difficult to eat, but was spicy and savoury nonetheless. Dry-fried pieces of baby squid, spiced with powdered chilli, were crisp outside, tender inside. Nigiri sushi is well-turned-out too; our sea bass nigiri was quite delicate and superbly fresh, as was nori-wrapped salmon roe. Black cod with miso, at the ungrasping price of £10.90, couldn’t be faulted. In all, a cut above average.

Easy going, cheerful, with a cheeky smile, caring, intelligent and maybe slightly quirky. I'm very *London*, live in a flat on the Thames. Often...

My wife and I have been frequent customers of Nobu, in London and New York for nearly 15 years. We can honestly say that the quality of sushi at Kappa is very good and the menu offers a good variety of traditional and specialty dishes. We have already been twice in 2 weeks and plan on returning on a regular basis.
Decent quality fare but portions are very small and don't represent great value for money. £9.20 for a tiny bowl of Udon with tempura (only 4) is just not good enough and the chicken yakitori, though decent enough, were the smallest I've ever eaten. If you're not on a tight budget go for it but you can get the same quality in London, and much bigger portions, for considerably less money.
Loved this place. Great quality Japanese food at affordable prices.
Been there for both lunch and dinner now. Lunch you get a very cheap Bento menu which surprized by the quality of the sushi/sashimi and hot dishes. Dinner has a bit more varied menu and a bit more expensive, but still great value for money.
Well worth visiting.
