• Square Pie

  • Square Pie has gone from being a little takeaway in Spitalfields Market (closed for a refurb as we went to press and reopening at the end of 2007) to stardom, with smart new premises popping up everywhere and Square Pies even served on Virgin Upper Class flights. This branch is right at home among the chain restaurants of the redeveloped Brunswick Centre. Outside, it shares alfresco seating space with Strada and Giraffe; the compact, bright interior has another handful of seats, but is dominated by a counter displaying the days glorious pies. The secret of SPs success? Top pies, made with top-quality ingredients. The steak versions are as generously filled as Jordans swimsuit, with crusts firmer than Peter Andres abs. Besides the usual beefcakes are varieties such as chicken, leek and ham, lamb and rosemary, and Friday fish pie. Vegetarians will be satisfied with mushroom and asparagus pie with vegetarian onion gravy. Our favourite detail is that the maris piper potatoes are mashed skin-on. To drink, theres scrummy Chegworth Valley apple juices and this branch even has an alcohol licence.
