Opinion remains divided about the name, but this runner-up in the 2007 Cheap Eats category of the Time Out Eating and Drinking Awards continues to thrive. Risotto is the USP, though there are plenty of alternatives: tiger prawns (three big juicy fellows) with garlic, chilli and trebbiano to start, say, or fresh pasta of the day, or slow-roast lamb shank with creamed potatoes to follow. On a cold, rainy night, two meaty risottos (ribeye with sweet onions, rocket and montepulciano wine, and pancetta with rosemary, borlotti beans and radicchio) hit the spot – both punchily flavoured and very filling. On balmier evenings you might plump for alle vongole (with clams, trebbiano, chilli and garlic), or funghi (with a mix of dried and fresh mushrooms and rosemary). Most of the risottos come in two sizes: small isn’t really that small and costs £6.50-£7.95; large is £8.50-£13.95. Desserts include a nice range of own-made ice-creams alongside traditional favourites like panacotta and tiramisu, a tart of the day and a selection of Italian cheeses. Service is genuinely smiley, and there’s a nicely priced wine list. The pared-down, gently-modern decor looks briskly efficient at lunchtimes, while clever lighting makes it seem cosier by night.
Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2009
Because you might like what you find? My friends describe me as being strong and independent, I combine being a single mum with having a full time...
With intimate little booths/tables and a chilled out cosy vibe this is more suited to intimate/smaller parties than groups(although they very nicely constructed a table for 6 of us at twenty minutes notice one evening) . I've been about four times now, staff have always been great and friendly, food always good (though as risotto is quite heavy I'd always take the 'small' where available), with a good mix of specials up on the chalkboard.
Strongly recommend their rather fun and creamy version of a Tirimasu, and they've always been happy for us to linger over coffee.
Not recommended for anyone with restricted mobility: toilets are a bit of a trek down a very steep and narrow staircase.
Definitely a good budget choice and risotto is generally quite tasty and lovely.
the restaurant is a little "loud" however which is a shame.
The staff generally friendly but quite rude when you wish to pay their tip in change and not the 12.5% on card - let alone it is not compulsory in the uK to pay this.. it should be at the customer's discretion. We were shocked at the attitude we got for that and had to explain that we were going to tip but on the side.. seriously rude.
On that alone it may be a while before we return.
