  • Ground

    Budget choice
  • With its opulent central pendant light and loft-style exposed brickwork, this Chiswick independent is more stylish and spacious than any of its gourmet-chain rivals. You’re led to olive-green leather booths to order from a menu that offers interesting beers and soft drinks (Mexican dark lager Negro Modelo, mint lemonade). All of the burgers – blue cheese, new york deli, hawaiian – are available meat-free, with two big beanburger patties. Vegetarians will be less pleased if the bacon’s left in, as it was with our order. The meat burgers are noticeably ground more coarsely than at most chains, producing a truly beefy bite, though the ‘artisan’ buns could do with beefing up; both our burgers collapsed into a gloopy mess. Top marks, though, for perfectly seasoned beer-battered onion rings. Ground’s high prices make it more suitable for a big blow-out than a fast-food fix, but the chains could certainly pick up a trick or two here.

Please, come on!......5 stars my ar*e!
The buns were stale. The pattie was over-cooked and crumbled when cut. The chorizo was that horrible rubbery stuff. The cheese on my friend cheese-burger was so thin it was transparent. Those "fantastic!" courgette chips were soggy and tasted only of the oil they were cooked in. In fact the only things that were decent were the french fries and the service (hence the one star)
Surely it can't be that hard to get a burger right!

For a burger restaurant, this is not really a "budget choice". For two people, the bill is usually around 30 pounds (burger, sides, drinks). However, the food is so delicious, that it doesn't seem too overpriced. The burgers are juicy, tasty and decent-sized. Courgette chips are fantastic! Nice place as well, I guess "charming" is the word. I love Chiswick!
