• Mother Mash

  • This isn’t the first café-restaurant to reinterpret a British classic, but others – S&M , Square Pie – have followed convention by making the meaty bit (sausages, pies) their focus. At Mother Mash you can get sausages and pies, but it’s the spud that takes the limelight – and why not? Who doesn’t love a heap of expertly mashed potato? A standard butter-and-milk mash is offered alongside a handful of variants, including irish champ (with spring onions and cheese). We had no reason to doubt the ‘mashed to order’ promise as we tucked into the piping-hot, fluffy mounds. Pies were very respectable: one bursting with tender Angus steak, another with chunks of haddock and hard-boiled egg. There’s also a choice of gravies, including the ‘liquor’ (parsley sauce) served in MM’s pie and mash shop forebears. These pie shops are the inspiration for the restaurant’s design: customers sit in booths on high-backed wooden banquettes; white ceramic tiles glisten on the walls. Breakfast and salad options broaden the appeal, as does a list of wines and beers. It adds up to a simple, successful, easily expandable formula; surely it won’t be long before this Mother spawns another.

MMMMMMMash. We wanted lovely, tasty comfort food at cheap prices after a few days of indulgence in londons pricier affairs and had one of our best meals of the trip. Beef and guiness sausages, cheesy mustard mash, peas and gravy, Marvellous. Great service, lovely food at sensible prices, what more could you want. Next time a pie I think.

Mother Mash is refreshingly different and cheap as chips (even though they don't serve chips). It looks like a 60's cafe but comes with simple, quality food. Chose your mash, bashed or mashed and then chose from a selection of sausages pies and gravies. My husband had the special - sweet Italian sausages - the best he'd ever had. My daughter had the lamb sausages which she described as being like roast lamb with mint sauce. And the mash ain't bad. Eight of us had 2 courses and drinks and it came to £101 - I doubt you could beat that in London - you certainly will not get the quality of food and efficient service that we received. we shall definitely go back next trip up to Town and I have recommended to friends and my boss.

All the staff are very friendly and every time I go I end up taking a new friend with me to share the love of mash.
