Haozhan brought a flash of glamour to Chinatown, with its modern decor and its fusion cuisine inspired by Hakkasan . On our early visits we were impressed by the skills of the chefs and the fresh, clean-cut cooking. A year or so later, standards seem to have slipped. On our most recent visit the chilli quail, which we remembered as thrilling, seemed soggy and over-sweet, and the glamorous house-special doufu (actually tofu made into a kind of custard with eggs) was disappointing, let down by the accompanying scallops that lacked flavour and tenderness. We enjoyed a nicely assembled sichuan hot-and-sour soup, thick with slivered beancurd, cloud-ear fungus, chicken and bamboo shoot. Less exciting (though still quite good) was the taiwanese san pei chicken, stir-fried with sweet basil, chilli and spring onion. Next time we’ll be more adventurous and try the Marmite prawns – an extraordinary idea. The restaurant itself is sleek and black, with coloured panels on the walls. Waiting staff seem friendlier than most in Chinatown. We hope the kitchen can recover the verve it displayed in the months after opening.

Having enjoyed several visits with biz colleagues I finally took my (Singaporean) wife last week. The curry battered soft shell crab was superb as ever, chili quail good, Haozhan beancurd with scallops silken & moist. With an excellent muscadet at £18 the bill came to £82. More expenive than average Chinatown but superb food and contrary to the Bobo's post it was a pleasure to see imaginative presentation along with exceptional food. We'll be back soon.
I SUPPOSE THIS IS THE NEW TREND NOW. SMALL PORTION AND EXPENSIVE. THERE IS NO NEED IN MY BOOK TO DECORATE AND SPEND SO MUCH TIME ON PRESENTATION. THE FOOD WILL BE COLD BY THE TIME RICH MY TABLE!! I THINK IT TOO GIMMEKY...NOT WORTH GOING BACK....NO RATING (ZERO)
Food and presentation were well above average for Gerrard Street but service was rushed, pushy and arrogant. Shrimp crackers and bottled water (both chargeable) arrived at our table without us ordering them. We were urged to order more and more rice (reason: "our portions are small"). And when we asked for a change to a less pushy waiter the whole staff became quite insolent. Give it a miss!
The food was good but the service was horrendous. The mains arrived before we had time to finish the soup. Then the bill was flashed before us before we could finish our drink or consider ordering tea/dessert. When I asked them what the rush was, they said they had another booking in 10 minutes! Considering that we had been there for around 45 minutes (and this isnt exactly hakkasaan!), I was not impressed. Not going back!
amazing food but the waiter was snide/a bit horrible, wouldn't let us order side noodles on their own (they're 7.50 almost as much as the main i'm sure it's okay to get just that?!) and i got the feeling he was annoyed we weren't older and spending money on wine. having said that the quail was life changing, mongolian beef was great and the portions are big enough so you can share a starter etc. the deep fried icecream tasted like a doughnut with icecream inside. i'll be going back some time as the food was good but the waiter was just not very nice. service charge included .... of course
what a load of rubbish. absolutely no history in the food. just mix with popular ingredients such as wasabi or marmite which anyone could come up with a bit of imagination.
Went to Haozhan Friday 7pm-ish, luckily got the last available table for 2. Ordered quail, Haozhan tofu, red wine beef, curry King Prawn served in a bread and pumpkin desert. Best food, in taste, flavour, texture, presentation, can be seen they used carefully selected ingredients. Haozhan is the fresh air into China Town, gave me and my hubby a proper dining experience other than just fill-up stomach like other budget restaurants. £45 per person including quality food, exotic drinks and service, it's the ultimate destination in central London.
Food:
The food here can be described as ‘Chinese with a modern touch’. However apart from the fancy names and vague descriptions I do not see how it is ranked best 20 restaurants in London. The offer only applies to particular foods on the menu which is not clearly labeled. It is fair to say that it is not their responsibility to inform us of ALL our available options, however when we asked our waiter of what is available we were given inaccurate information which resulted in paying almost the full price of the bill.
We explained our situation to a person in charge and were replied with in an extremely rude manner!
Chief Officer Reply:
“This is Chinese Cuisine, and we consider our sides to be different to Western cuisine. You did not read our website correctly and hence you will not be getting the reduction in price that you anticipated”.
True, we did not do our research before coming into the restaurant, BUT we DID ask the waiters how our card works. We were given false information and had to shoulder the consequences of the untrained, misinformed waiters provided by the restaurant themselves. In addition we got a big mouthful out of the person in charge when we kindly asked why our bill was more expensive than we thought.
The Food portions were also extremely small relative to the average price of GBP 10.00 per dish. However it should be said that the Mongolian Beef dish was very nice indeed but small.
Cost:
The cost on average is GBP 10.00 per dish. With non-deductible side dishes ranging from GBP 2-6. The drinks are GBP 2.00 per person on average.
Service:
As mentioned above, service was not well trained and the customers shoulder the mistakes of the employees of the restaurant.
Summary:
All in all I do not think we or any of our friends will be going here again. The prices are extremely high for what you are paying for (the portions are really small) and the service and customer relations is very poor (What restaurant would raise their voice against customers?). Due to misinformed staff members and disrespectful Chief Officer the concluding grade of 3/10 speaks for itself!
I thought the food here was really excellent - a top menu. The quail was delicious and the stirfried rib eye was also fantastic. The wasabi prawns were show stoppers. I thought the prices were reasonable and most of all, compared to some comments on this site, the service was excellent. Waiters were attentive and informative. However I was there on a Tueday at 9.00p.m - it was busy but not placing the staff under any stress.
Ate here last night - a Saturday - with a friend. Food was good though desserts are disappointing. Big problem with the service though. After just over an hour we were still drinking wine and tea - and we were shifted to another table. They had brought the bill without us asking for it. Then, every two or three minutes we were asked to leave for other customers. I asked how long they gave you for a booking. I was told 'an hour and a quarter'. The waiter was quite aggressive. The couple on the table next to us were also being hassled to move. So don't eat here if you want to enjoy your meal without being hassled. I've eaten here midweek and it's better, but only because people aren't waiting for tables.
