A relative newcomer, this classy restaurant already has a host of enthusiastic reviews adorning its reception. The interior is sleek and modern, with large windows overlooking a watery view of Crossharbour dock. Arriving without a reservation, we were obligingly squeezed in along the bar. Tables were packed with business types, a few couples breaking up the sea of shirts. The menu is what you might expect of any smart London eaterie, with the necessary salute to fine ingredients, provenance and regionality. To start, a juicy own-made chorizo sausage was beautifully complemented by tart balsamic-dressed rocket. Skilfully prepared seafood paella contained creamy grains of rice and a subtle depth of flavour rarely achieved in the average Spanish restaurant. Our impressive meal ended with a selection of house desserts, visual treats that tasted just as good – cinnamon-spiked arroz con leche; a delicate slab of warm, moist chocolate cake; and silky crema catalana. Despite being busy, staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Even if you don’t live or work nearby, El Faro is worth the trip.
