London's best review, food and drink news
A combination of Mexican cantina and tequila bar, with wooden floors and panelling, Green & Red looks like a set from a Sergio Leone film, only nicer. It has a vibrant atmosphere, with crowds of loyalists vying for space in the ground-floor eaterie and basement bar. The tequila list seems virtually limitless; aficionados will be in cactus-juice heaven. Happily, the food is just as good, and creative. The owners are fans of food from Jalisco, the Mexican province where most tequila is produced. So the menu incorporates smoky ancho chillies stuffed with crumbly cheese; ceviche (fish marinated in citrus juices) with pomegranate seeds; and pork belly with grilled ribs rubbed with orange salt. Mains are served with steamed corn tortillas, fresh beans and shredded cabbage, as well as freshly made salsas. Desserts continue the authentic theme; one of the best options is the churros (doughnuts) served with spiced chocolate sauce. The atmosphere can get raucous and the music is sometimes too loud but the food makes up for such shortcomings.

We might have picked up the wrong dishes but ours came cold and tasted very average (if it tasted anything at all !), the only attractive thing about this place is the tequila list.
I live on Bethnal Green Road and my husband and I were really excited to see the Rich Mix building erected and were eager to try out this restaurant. The setting was nice with a fantastic host, well informed bar staff and a really pleasant downstairs bar. The food was a bit pricey for the type of cuisine and the portions but all of the dishes were tasty and served quickly.
I didn't go back for a few months and in the past 6 months or so, the food quality has gone down. Everything was either too dry, salty, cold or excessively miniscule, and the waitress offered us tortilla chip and salsa as if it were free. Of course we said "yes" and then found it on our bill. The host that formerly charmed the pants off us has obviously gone on to greener pastures.
This place is now for city suckers who are willing to pay a hefty price for mediocre service and food. I'd say it's a good place to get a tasty margarita but that's about it.
Green & Red is one of my favourite Shoreditch haunts. The food is always mouth wateringly delicous and the service somewhat relaxed but always friendly. The Charales are cooked to perfection, the Birria is to die for and the churros are dangerously addictive!! I always find myself using any method neccessary to extract all the spicy chocolate sauce. I would throughly reccomend this restuarant to anyone who loves good food
