London's best review, food and drink news
Brentford isnt the most obvious location for an upmarket Caribbean restaurant. But tucked beside the Thames and just across the river from Kew Gardens, newcomer Glistening Waters is already one of Londons best. White walls, modern paintings and African sculpture create an elegant yet funky vibe. Heady smells fill the dining room every time a sizzling platter emerges; bassa bassa chicken, for example, brought with it the delicious aroma of tamarind. Satisfied mmms and aahs from those who had ordered it fuelled our excitement before our own meal had arrived. An exquisitely presented starter of plantain rounds (strips of plantain bent into circles) filled with ackee and callaloo did not disappoint; it was one of the best ackee dishes weve found in London. A main of coconut rundown (prawns cooked in coconut sauce with noodles) was also good. Though full after two courses, meringues filled with cream, sweet mango chunks and passionfruit proved irresistible. Prices here are a bit higher than at other Caribbean restaurants, but the quality of the cooking justifies them. Glistening Waters have definitely raised the bar in this genre, thanks to an uncomplicated but well-executed menu, assisted by faultless service.
