Hackney’s regeneration has been slow, and nowhere slower than in Clapton, but Venetia’s is one of the trendsetting pioneers at last bringing a bit of class to a scabby stretch of Chatsworth Road. The coffee puts the pitiful offerings of chain competitors to shame, as does the range of food. Lovely glass cake-stands display copious sweets and pastries, among them chocolate and fruitcakes, own-made victoria sponge crammed with jam and cream, and assorted croissants, brownies and cookies. If untempted by such sweet-toothed fare, there are delicious sandwiches too (toasted if you fancy), on organic white, brown or rye bread, or baguettes. Specials on our visit included dolcelatte and rocket, and halloumi and turkish sausage. Beyond the counter is a small area with bare brick walls, a low table, leather seats and some toys, where a family with small kids was happily chomping through brownies. A few more youngsters were out back playing games on the computer. Service is exceptionally friendly and, before 9am, a coffee and croissant combo is just £1.50. Come on, Clapton, this is more like it!
