Stepping into Numidie, you leave behind unromantic Westow Hill for a Parisian-style bistro with mismatched wooden furniture, bright painted walls, a clutter of picture frames and a token chandelier. The venue has a quirky charm to it and would make a great spot for a first date. An interesting mix of French and Algerian cooking is served, though it’s the sort of food you could knock up at home. A French classic of duck breast salad looked pitiful and ungenerous on shredded lettuce, but the meat was so tender and smoky we soon forgot its appearance. The house salad had a more North African flavour, containing houmous, falafel, piperade and stuffed artichokes. Saffron-stained seafood couscous was attractive, and a little salt saved the creamy winter vegetable gratin, served with juicy steak. In the basement you’ll find an equally characterful wine bar, popular with locals.
