  • While nearby Old Street becomes an increasingly manic party district, this secluded civilised pub is a homely escape for enjoying laid-back drinks or a square meal. The decor is modestly trendy: walls and wooden furniture are painted white and embellished with an assortment of portraits, photographs and stuffed animals. The main bar is a small single room, but clever use of communal tables maximises the available space. In good weather there’s extra seating outside. Upstairs is a dedicated dining room, though the same menu is available throughout. Food is hearty and filling, but nothing special, and there were some disappointments on a recent visit. The plates were fridge-cold. A burger arrived filled with a big blob of overpowering cheddar, not fully melted, and yet the bun seemed unheated. A slab of pork belly was overdone: the flesh too dry, the skin so caramelised it was almost rock-solid. Less involved starters of mackerel pâté and wild mushrooms on brioche were better. Drinks include draught Black Sheep, London Pride, Hoegaarden, and Leffe, plus a fair selection of inexpensive wines. The cooking could use a boot up the backside, but the pub offers atmosphere in abundance.

Nice fitout if a bit soulless, but found the food quite average. Tried the pork belly, it was a paltry serving with a burnt Yorkshire pudding. The vegetables looked like the ones that are sold in the frozen food section of a supermarket. The pork was dry, and very thinly sliced, possibly to make it look as though there was more on the plate than there actually was. Tried the charcuterie plate. The flat bread was nice, as was the olive oil, but again supermarket quality salami - 3 slices of milano, 1 slice of proscuitto, and cubes of a previously unexperienced cured meat that was so salty it was inedible. Thought the £6 price was steep for the dish.
So maybe that is what you get on Sundays, we probably will not go there again to find out what the weekday menu is like. Its disappointing when a place is identified as Gastropub but the food does not match. Even the small things, like having to ask to get the grotty table cleaned before they put cutlery down on it. If the service was outstanding it would go some way to make up for other shortfallings, but it was not to be. Good luck to the next punter.
