You’ll be lucky to get a seat here on a Sunday, when the popularity of Columbia Road Flower Market makes this small space – tucked into a lovely little alley – a better bet for a tasty takeaway bagel. On Fridays and Saturdays, however, the atmosphere is positively tranquil, with the rustling of newspapers and the quiet click of chess pieces the defining sounds. The homely vibe of the interior (kitchen supplies are messily arranged on shelves behind a high red counter) carries over into the selection of food, with eggs, muesli, porridge, own-made bread and cakes complemented by specials that might include kippers or delicious own-made baked beans. Freshly squeezed orange juice and basic but high-quality coffee are good drinks options, best enjoyed in the sun at one of the battered metal tables outside. Staff can be a bit standoffish and you might be left waiting ages for your order (as we were), but, for many, it’s all part of the non-chainlike charm.
